History

The origin of Dronacharya Government College, Gurugram can be traced back to Hindu College at Gujranwala (Pakistan). After partition in the year 1947, it was established at its present location at Gurugram in May 1951 and was rechristened as Dronacharya Sanatan Dharam College. This was the outcome of untiring efforts of Goswami Ganesh Dutt, a renowned Sanatan Dharam Leader and some philanthropists of the district. Its mission was to impart value based higher education, for preparing the youth to aspire the supreme ideals of truth, goodness and beauty(Satyam, Shivam and Sunderam). It was taken over by the Government of Haryana on 14 th January 1980. During its long and glorious history the college has turned out capable administrators, scholars of eminence, famous sportsman and heroes of war and peace. The college has had the proud privilege of receiving dignitaries of national and international stature like Dr. Rajender Prashad , Dr. S. Radahakrishnan, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Lady Mountbatton , Smt. Vijaylaxmi Pandit, Field Marshal K.M. Kariappa, Gen. J.K. Bhonsle and Literary luminaries like Dr. Hazari Prashad Dwiwedi , Dr. Girija Kumar Mathur , Dr. Namwar Singh, Sh. Jaitender Kumar Jain, Dr. Harivanshrai Bachhan and many other as guest of honour on its various functions.

Presently located in the heart of city between old Railway road and new Railway road which serves as two arteries of the city , the college sprawls on 16 acre of prime land enfolding spacious building comprising old and new science blocks, arts block, commerce block and new teaching block . It also has an auditorium, a big conference hall, well – equipped labs, a rich library, a Computer centre, a botanical garden. Apart from these the college also has extensive playground for outdoor games and facility for indoor games.

Since its inception five decades ago, the college has witnessed growth in both numbers and achievements. From a mere 368 students in the year 1976, the strength has risen to a massive 7000 in the current year. In addition the college has on its roll 2000 students in distance education programme and 1600 students in IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) study centre.
