Concept and Aim of
NSS: The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a
Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs &
Sports. The
scheme was launched in Gandhiji's Centenary year in 1969. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students
in delivering community service. In this concern DGC have two units
with two programme officers for each unit of NSS volunteers, one for girls and
one for boys having 100 students each. NSS plays a vital role in the academic expansion of volunteers.
The spirit of selfless service is inculcated among the student and NSS
Programme Officers through sustained community interactions.
Objectives
The main objective of NSS is the personality
development of the students through community services.
The Specific Objectives are:
- To
provide a variety of learning experience
- To
develop a sense of participation, service, and achievement among the
volunteers
- To
emphasize the dignity of labor and self – help and the need for combining
physical work and intellectual perspectives
- To
develop a sense of social and civic responsibility
- To
develop the capacity to meet emergencies and national disaster
- To
acquire leadership qualities and a democratic attitude
- To
identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in the
problem-solving process
- To
practice national integration and social harmony
NSS symbol, Motto and duration
The symbol of NSS is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel
of the Konark Sun temple of Orissa.The 24 bars represents 24 hours of the day.
The red color indicates that the volunteers are full of blood i.e., lively,
active, energetic, and full of high spirit.
The Motto or watched word of the NSS is ‘Not Me
But YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need
for self-less service. The volunteers need two years to get certification of
NSS form the concerned authority.
NSS Activities
NSS activities have been divided into two major
groups.
(1) Regular Activities
Various one days campus were organised in the
college campus along with adopted village area and these includes the
activities like.

Cleanliness drives in the campus
·
Orientation camp
·
Awareness rallies for road safety, girl education and environmental
protection etc.
·
Various essay writing competition, poster making competition and debate
competition were organised during the session.
·
Celebration of important national days
2) Special Camping Programme
7 days Special camp is integral part of NSS and
organised in each session. Various activities were performed during the camp
such as
·
Incorporation of group- living behaviour and collective experience
sharing among students through various group activities.
·
Development of student’s qualities like character, courage, self-discipline,confidence,
decision –making, democratic attitudes and leadership through various
activities like motivational lectures and various drills regarding nation
service.
·
During the campvarious awareness ralliesand nukkad-natak were performed
along with First aid training programme for all the volunteers.
